Physical, Verbal and Emotional Abuse. Includes depictions of abuse directed at children. There is no sexual abuse, but there is mention of Anopheles killing people who abuse people in such a way.
Mental Health topics. Characters deal with a lot of turmoil and trauma. Self harm and suicidal ideation is shown in the comic.
Substance Abuse. There are depictions of characters misusing drugs, alcohol and medication. Includes overdosing and withdrawal.
Animal Abuse. There are depictions of animal abuse and torture a few times in the comic.
Violence and Gore. There are explicit acts of violence depicted in the comic.
If any of these topics will have a negative affect on you, you’re free to not read the comic. Take care of yourselves.
The Commune is primarily psychological horror, but I’d also call it a drama. The tone (especially in later chapters) will be tragic and depressing so beware of that going in. Also very light “supernatural” only because characters have powers, but powers are more for symbolism than anything else.
The Commune is set in a light urban fantasy world! Powers and such are rare, but not unheard of in this world. For example, the cops in Chapter 2 look curious about 01’s portal powers but they are aware that the ability exists. But they’re rare enough to have people asking you questions, which is why you’ll see Anopheles covering up his mandibles and wings in public.
Anopheles is human, but he was born with “mosquito traits” . The world is light urban fantasy so these are real features he has (I’ve had people think they were part of a costume haha!) As mentioned in the above question, Anopheles will cover up his wings and mandibles in public to prevent being identified, but he will fully embrace his “mosquito” elements in the cult with his mask and outfit. His real name isn’t Anopheles, it’s a name he gave to his cultists to call him. He is able to identify people by blood, as everyone smells unique to him, hence the blood vial necklaces the cultists wear.
This will be more clearly explained as the comic progresses, but 01’s powers are being able to create a gateway from one place to another. 01 expresses that they need a clear mental image of where they need to go to prevent any catastrophe. You see at the beginning of Chapter 2 that 01 is looking at print outs Anopheles gave them so that they can take people out on missions. 01 can use their powers like a vacuum too, which they use to stop 24 punching them in Chapter 7, but this takes a lot of mental energy for them.
01 is nonbinary transmasc (they/them) and 267 is a cis guy (he/him).
Yup. Anopheles is very accepting of marginalised identities, especially as he draws in vulnerable people. His cult isn’t following any particular religion, so you’ll see that the cultists can look alternative or gender non-conforming without issue. Even still, Anopheles maintains control through conformity, where cultists all wear their uniforms and number designations. You see that in Chapter 4, he takes issue with you doing things without his permission (130 dying her hair) rather than you looking “different.”
Doesn’t need to be said, but no, this doesn’t mean that I’m saying that being LGBTQ+ is a cult. The cult members are queer regardless of cult influence. If you’re pushing homophobic or transphobic rhetoric onto my work you can see the door.
